Tips on how the pricing of prepaid electricity works.

A question I hear often as an estate agent in Randburg is, ‘How does prepaid electricity pricing work?’ I often meet people who think that later in the month, you buy electricity, or the smaller the amount you buy in a month, the more expensive it gets.  This is not the case.

Prepaid Electricity Is Charged In Blocks Or Usage

Prepaid electricity is bought and managed in Blocks. The cost of prepaid electricity is determined by the amount of electricity you buy and therefore use.

Calculating The Prepaid Electricity Blocks & Values

Here is how the block and unit values are calculated:

  • For the first 350 kilowatts you buy, you will pay R1.80 per unit.
  • For the 2nd block of 350 kilowatts, you will pay R2.50 per unit.
  • After or for the 3rd block from 700 kilowatts, you buy, you will pay R3.50 per unit.

How Is The Block Value Controlled Or Managed?

Your prepaid electricity unit regulates the cost, and it automatically calculates which block you are in and what you will pay.  It’s about how much you use and which block you are in. No matter when you buy.
