Choosing the right school for your child can influence far more than their education. For many families, it eventually influences where they choose to live.
If you are considering The King’s School Robin Hills for your child, you may also be looking at Robin Hills, Robindale and the surrounding Randburg suburbs and wondering whether moving closer to school could make everyday family life a little easier.
I understand that decision from both sides.
I am a Randburg estate agent, but I am also a parent at The King’s School Robin Hills. My daughter has attended the school for years, and we live in nearby Robindale.
Living so close to school has made an enormous difference to our daily routine — and it is one of the reasons I believe the school run deserves far more consideration when families decide where to buy their next home.
About The King’s School Robin Hills
The King’s School Robin Hills is an independent Christian school situated in Gemsbok Road, Robin Hills, Randburg.
The school caters for children from pre-primary through primary school and high school, allowing families the possibility of remaining within the same school community for many years.
Christian faith is not simply an addition to the school’s programme. The school describes its vision as educating and equipping the children of Christian parents to serve the Kingdom of God effectively.
As a Christian parent myself, that was important to me.
There is something very special about knowing that the values being taught at home can continue into your child’s school environment.
What does The King’s School Robin Hills offer?
The school combines academics with Christian development, sport, culture and opportunities for children to participate in the wider life of the school.
The High School follows the IEB curriculum and the school reports a consistently strong matric performance, including a 100% IEB pass rate.
Sport is also encouraged, with activities including swimming, cricket, tennis, netball, soccer, rugby, athletics, cross-country and chess at various stages of the year.
Cultural opportunities include choir, public speaking, debating, photography, drama, worship, music and art.
But as a parent, school life isn’t only about what appears on the prospectus.
It’s the friendships. The teachers who know your child. The school events. The sport afternoons. The rushed mornings. The forgotten lunchbox. The extra mural you suddenly remember starts in twenty minutes.
And that brings me to something families sometimes underestimate when choosing a school:
distance matters.
What is it like living close to The King’s School Robin Hills?
We live in Robindale, approximately 1 km from the school.
For our family, that has been wonderful.
The morning school run doesn’t dominate the start of the day. Getting to an afternoon activity isn’t an expedition. If I need to attend something at school, I can get there quickly and return to work.
Those little pieces of time add up.
Johannesburg traffic can turn what looks like a relatively short distance on Google Maps into a very different journey during school-run traffic.
That is why, when parents ask me about property near a particular Randburg school, I encourage them to think beyond kilometers.
Drive the route at 7:00 in the morning.
Drive it again when school finishes.
Consider the afternoon sport and extra-mural programme.
Then ask yourself:
Could we comfortably do this every weekday for the next five, ten or even twelve years?
Sometimes that answer changes the property search completely.
Which suburbs are close to The King’s School Robin Hills?
One of the advantages of the school’s location is the choice of established residential suburbs surrounding it.
Robin Hills
The obvious place to begin is Robin Hills itself.
Living in the same suburb as the school can make the daily commute exceptionally convenient. Robin Hills is an established Randburg suburb with mature gardens and a mixture of family homes and other residential options.
For parents specifically looking to minimise their school run, it deserves a place on the shortlist.
Robindale
Neighbouring Robindale is another area I would consider.
This is where my daughter and I live, so my understanding of this particular school commute is very personal.
Robindale is an established, leafy suburb with family homes, sectional-title properties and convenient access to several parts of Randburg.
Being approximately 1 km from school has given us something I value enormously:
time.
And for a busy family, sometimes time is one of the most valuable things a home can give you.
Randpark Ridge and surrounding areas
Depending on the type of property, budget and lifestyle your family wants, the search can also extend into other nearby Randburg suburbs.
Randpark Ridge, for example, provides a broad selection of family property and is already an area many parents consider when looking for established homes in Randburg.
The right suburb isn’t necessarily the one closest to the school gate.
It is the one that gives your family the best combination of school access, property, budget and lifestyle.
Should you move closer to your child’s school?
Not necessarily.
If your existing school run works well and you love where you live, there may be absolutely no reason to move.
But there are families for whom the equation starts changing.
Perhaps you are spending an hour or more every day driving backwards and forwards.
Perhaps your child has moved into high school and extracurricular commitments have increased.
Perhaps you have several children attending the same school.
Or perhaps you are already considering a move and proximity to your preferred school has become one of your priorities.
That’s when it is worth looking at the numbers.
What could your existing home sell for?
What could you realistically buy closer to school?
Would you need to upsize, downsize or simply relocate?
And importantly:
Would the move genuinely improve your family’s everyday life?
Those are much better questions than simply asking, “What houses are for sale near The King’s School?”
Buying a home near The King’s School Robin Hills
If the school is driving your property search, I recommend starting with the family rather than the property portals.
Write down what actually matters.
How many bedrooms do you need?
Do you want a freestanding home or would a secure complex suit your lifestyle better?
Do you need a garden?
Are you prepared to renovate?
What is your comfortable property budget?
How important is the school-run distance?
Then we can begin comparing the surrounding suburbs and properties against those requirements.
That usually produces a much more focused property search.
Already own a home in Randburg and considering moving closer?
This is where the conversation becomes slightly different.
Before you start falling in love with properties closer to school, it helps to understand the likely value and saleability of the home you already own.
A realistic property valuation gives you a much better starting point.
You can then understand your likely selling price, your available equity and the price range you can comfortably consider for your next home.
At Sell with Sandy, powered by Cornerstone Homes, much of my work is helping Randburg homeowners make exactly these kinds of decisions.
Sometimes the answer is, “Yes, let’s move.”
Sometimes it is, “Not yet.”
Both can be good decisions when they are based on the right information.

A school decision can become a property decision
I originally wrote about The King’s School Robin Hills back in 2024 because I wanted to share a school that had become an important part of our family’s life.
Years later, I see the subject slightly differently.
I still value the Christian foundation enormously.
I still love having my daughter at the school.
But as an estate agent working across Randburg, I also see how often children’s schooling quietly shapes the decisions families make about property.
Where we live determines our commute.
It affects our mornings.
It affects how easily we can attend the swimming gala, rugby match, concert or parent meeting.
And sometimes moving only a few kilometres can change the rhythm of family life considerably.
Thinking about moving closer to The King’s School Robin Hills?
You don’t need to start by putting your home on the market.
Start by understanding your options.
If you already own property in Randburg, we can look at what your current home may realistically sell for and what your budget could buy in Robin Hills, Robindale or the surrounding areas.
If you’re relocating into Randburg, I can also help you understand the differences between the suburbs around the school so that you aren’t simply choosing a house — you’re choosing the location that needs to work for your family every day.
That’s the kind of property conversation I love having.
